But Tempe is much more than just a college town.  The Mill Avenue District is Tempe’s unique pedestrian-friendly downtown that captures the town's vibrant spirit:.  Shady red brick sidewalks, turn of the century buildings, restaurants, shops, entertainment venues, and Tempe Town Lake all make the Mill Avenue District a necessary stop for great dining, shopping and nightlife! Tempe Town Lake, set adjacent to Tempe's Mill Avenue District, ASU and 2,000 acre Papago Park, adds to our unique personality.  Kayak, paddleboat or take rowing lessons on Tempe Town Lake or jog or walk around the lake's pathways.

We are noted for our contemporary architecture.  Buildings such as Tempe's City Hall inverted pyramid, ASU's Gammage  designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and ASU's Art Museum designed by Antoine Predock, illustrate Tempe’s affinity for unusual and beautiful architecture.

We also are a treat for the taste buds and offer an eclectic mix of food options from around the world.  Tempe's nightlife adds to the enjoyment. Tempe Marketplace, Mill Avenue and the streets surrounding Arizona State University all have bars and late night dining options along with live music, the Tempe Improv, dueling pianos and interesting street performers.

Tempe has a great selection of community parks. Tempe Kiwanis Park offers tennis, fishing, bike trails and an indoor wave pool. Tempe Beach Park features great open spaces, a baseball field, water activities on Tempe Town Lake and Cox Splash Playground for cool summer fun. For hiking and biking enthusiasts Papago Park is a gem in the middle of the metropolitan area.

Enjoy the Desert Botanical Garden, The Buckeye Zoo, Hall of Flame Museum and Pueblo Grande Museum. Hit the ice at Oceanside Ice Rink Tempe. Catch a game -  the Los Angeles Angels hold spring training in Tempe and ASU's Sun Devil stadium is home to the Insight Bowl.  Tempe is also home to 6 golf courses.

Nearby, South Mountain Park Preserve provides beautiful scenery and sometimes challenging hiking and mountain bike trails. The park is the largest municipal park in the US with over 16,000 acres. For a shorter hike, try Tempe’s own Hayden Butte, more popularly known as “A” Mountain. This short hike is located in the heart of the Mill Avenue District and offers amazing views of Tempe.

Some of the most recent lakefront community construction has taken place around Tempe Town Lake.  Single family lake communities are The Lakes and The Oasis at Anozira.  Waterfront condo developments include Northshore Condominiums, Regatta Point, Bridgeview and Hayden Ferry Lakeside. Close to ASU, shopping, entertainment, and only minutes from Sky Harbor airport, these waterfront communities provide all the essentials and more for urban living.
