Living in Cave Creek

The Town of Cave Creek is named for Cave Creek, a small stream that originates in the hills to the northeast. The stream derives its name from a high, overhanging bluff along its west bank that forms a wide open-mouthed cavern about two miles north of the present day town. Cave Creek has a colorful past.

In 1874, William Rowe discovered gold on Gold Hill, northwest of Cave Creek. His discovery touched off a gold rush and began to attract permanent settlers. Jeriah Wood, a young cattleman from Missouri, established a ranch on the east bank of the Cave Creek. By 1877, he had built a home called Cave Creek Station. He sold goods to miners and travelers and maintained a small post office. When mining went into one of its periodic slumps, the post office closed and Jeriah Wood moved to Buckeye. Another Missouri cattleman, Andrew Jackson Hoskin, took over the Cave Creek Station. Soon other families moved in. A lively community grew up around the Hoskin Ranch. By 1886, there was a need for a one-room schoolhouse and this was built beside Cave Creek. Mining activity declined around 1894, although it never stopped completely.

Ride into the desert on a horse from Spur Cross Stables, MTM Ranch or Cave Creek Trails. Play a little golf at Rancho Manana Golf Club.

If indoor activities are more your style, Cave Creek has you in mind. Our Desert Foothills Theatre has presented award-winning theater in the Cave Creek area for over 34 years. Celebrating more than 18 years of bringing great music to the area, Arizona Musicfest is a premiere music festival featuring professional performances from masters of classical, jazz, Broadway and other musical styles. The Sonoran Arts League is dedicated to actively advancing art, artists and art education. The Cave Creek Film and Arts Festival promotes and celebrates rounds out our indoor slate of events.

Cave Creek has 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and one high school. All schools have earned the rank of “excelling” by Arizona LEARNS achievement profile. AZ LEARNS results are based on AIMS and MAP scores, AYP status and graduation/dropout rates. Schools are identified as Excelling, Highly Performing, Performing Plus, Performing, Under Performing, Failing to Meet Academic Standards or Pending.

Discover deals and near-steals at Cave Creek’s Thieves Market, an outdoor flea market that takes place downtown  on the first and third Saturday's of each month. This popular event is a one-of-a-kind flea market where sellers and town retailers come together to offer the kind of “perfectly uncivilized” fun that is unique to Cave Creek.

Visit the Cave Creek Coffee Company, a bustling gathering place for cowboys or city slickers pretending to be cowboys. The coffee, which is roasted right in Cave Creek, is delicious, as is the breakfast menu.
