Living in Avondale

Avondale's founding father, William "Billy" G. Moore, arrived in Arizona in the late 1860s, settling near the Agua Fria River in 1880. Billy Moore called his settlement "Coldwater, Arizona" - apparently both for the river and the water that flowed from a local spring. He bought land, established a stage stop, erected a saloon and a general store, and was Postmaster of Coldwater from 1901 till 1905.  In the early 1900s, the Coldwater post office moved to a site near Avondale Ranch. The post office soon became known as Avondale, and the name Coldwater was discontinued.

Nestled in the shadows of the Estrella Mountains and mere 15 minutes west of downtown Buckeye, Avondale offers all the advantages of a small community with all the cultural and entertainment resources that Buckeye has to offer.

Avondale recreation includes hiking, bird watching, water recreation such as canoeing and kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, archery, geo-caching, desert survival and camping basics and more.  The 4-star Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa in neighboring Litchfield Park is nearby.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Avondale yearly to experience all types of national sporting events. Avondale is home to Buckeye International Raceway (PIR), which hosts two NASCAR races annually each attracting nearly 400,000 enthusiasts and hundreds of race teams. Avondale is also minutes from the University of Buckeye Stadium, Jobing.com Arena and many Cactus League stadiums.

If that isn't enough, the RAVE Review magazine keep Avondale citizens in touch with all the activities that Avondale and the surrounding area has to offer.  RAVE Review is a city produced publication, printed tri-annually, for the residents of Avondale.

 

The Avondale Business Community

Avondale is becoming a hub of development activity. The City’s location on Interstate 10 as well as direct access to rail and air transportation, and an educated work force make Avondale an unbeatable location for office or industrial development.

Avondale’s freeway development sites are premium locations for new stores, restaurants, hotels, offices and business parks. Over 2.3 million potential customers are within a 30-minute radius and the Buckeye valley wide population is over 4 million.

Major employers include:  Aqua Fria Union High School District, Avondale Auto Mall, Avondale Elementary School District, Avondale Integrated Medical Services, City of Avondale, Costco Wholesale, Home Depot, Litchfield Park Elementary School District, Sam’s Club, Tolleson Union High School District, Universal Technical Institute, and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
 

Opportunities to excel in education are boundless. Avondale is home to Estrella Mountain Community College, Rio@Avondale Learning Center and Universal Technical Institute. Avondale Elementary School District is home to 5 elementary schools and one middle school.  Westview High School, La Joya Community High School, and Agua Fria High School are large high schools in Avondale.

Local area institutes for higher learning include Estrella Mountain Community College (part of Maricopa Community College District), Arizona State University -West Campus, Grand Canyon University, Midwestern University-Glendale and Thunderbird School of Global Management.  Additionally, Park University, located on Luke AFB, is a four-year institution that provides reduced tuition to military and their dependents as well as civilians living in the surrounding communities.

Avondale Shopping

If you like shopping with no-hassle parking, Avondale is the place for you.  Litchfield and Dysart Roads have become the heart of shopping and dining in Avondale. Several power centers fill the area as well as many of the major chain restaurants, such as Macaroni Grill, TGI Friday's, Applebee's, Black Angus, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Chili's, Cracker Barrel, P.F.Chang's, McGrath's and Macayo's.
